Computer Arts "Building a pixel art world" tutorial

Computer Arts pixel tutorial

Long time ago Computer Arts released a tutorial called "Building a pixel art world". (I guess I even read that in their paper edition). Although I disagree with some points of this article - it's still worth to check out. Computer Arts got a free pdf edition of the tutorial here.

MrWong's SoupPartments

MrWong's SoupPartments

Here's a link from very old past. Some few years ago pixel artist MrWong created a project where people (other pixel artists) were able to create a floor of the virtual building and submit that on the projects site. Over 400 people pixelized their appartments and the build is the highest virtual building developed till today. Although it's terminated for long time - it's still worth to visit MrWong's SoupPartments.

Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari)

I've just stumbled on this little pixel-art gem - a freeware (oh I like the sound of that) platform game with very nice pixel art graphic. Moreover - the gameplay is also very nice (just take a look on the list of weapons and monsters).
The game was created by Japanese company called Studio Pixel, but I guess the english fanpage would be a better place to start.
Game was developed for Windows, but there are ports for Mac and Linux (and some consoles as well).

8Bit trip

Movie made with lego blocks. Those guys say that it took them 1500 hours to make it - and I actually belive them.

Mecha-Firefoxzilla

Here's a piece I've made for Infectious contest "Best Friends Forever - People&Robots".
So - this artwork is called "Mecha-Firefoxzilla protecting the city agains evil IEBots".
If you could spare few seconds and cast a vote for it - that would be fantastic, thanks:)

32x32 - iPhone Pixel-art editor

Recently I've stumbled on some rather strange tool - a Pixel-Art editor for iPhone.
It's called 32x32 and it costs 0,79 Euro at the iTunes. The more important questions is - is it any good?
Well, first of all - you can only create 32 by 32 pixels artworks. And you only get 5 colors (all grayscale).
I guess that would be enough for some uses, but here we come to the major flaw - the usability of this app is very poor.
You need to use both hands (one to control the position of the brush and second to tap to use the current tool).
Moreover - if you would like to change the tool you need to tap with the finger you're using for controlling the cursor.
Oh - btw. there's no zoom as well.
So - final verdict is: 32x32 is pretty useless in any real work scenario. But if you spend a lot of time doing nothing (you travel for example). And you would like to create some sketches of icons you will work on later - I guess 32x32 will do the trick.

Pixel Girls by Jean Yves Lemoigne

French photographer Jean Yves Lemoigne created a series of editorial pictures for Amusement magazine. Those are not pixel works, but are so heavily inspired by pixel art that they deserve a place here.
Check the whole set at Jean Yves Lemoigne website.

Mother of them all - Space Invaders

I guess if you're just a little bit interested in pixel art - you know that game for sure.
I remember playing it as a little kid (on real arcade machine - yes, I'm that old).
Space Invaders - I guess those are the most recognizable sprites in the history of video games.
Without more talk - here's the Space Invaders made by Neave Game (visit their site - there are more clones of great retro games).
